Inside the Yacht Routes Celebrities Are Actually Taking This Year
Shorter island hops are replacing the week-long charter as the preferred celebrity summer move.
Jun 27, 2026 · BigTravel.inThe week-long Mediterranean charter used to be the standard for a luxury summer trip. What is actually happening on the water this year looks different: shorter, sharper island hops that fit a tighter schedule and, frankly, photograph better too.
Why the short hop has taken over
A two to three day charter between two or three islands, rather than a full week crossing an entire coastline, lets a smaller, faster boat do the job a much larger charter used to. It needs less crew, costs significantly less to charter, and fits into a long weekend rather than requiring a dedicated week of leave, which matters even for travellers who are not counting rupees as carefully as the rest of us.
What a typical short route looks like
One anchor bay for swimming and lunch on day one, a harbour town for dinner and an evening walk on the same or following day, and a short crossing back to the starting port. The Amalfi Coast to Capri route, or a hop between two Greek islands like Hydra and Spetses, are the classic versions of this shorter format that have become far more common than the old full-week charter.

The boat size question
Bigger is not automatically better here. A mid-size sailing or motor yacht, comfortably under twenty metres, is easier to dock at smaller harbours, costs a fraction of a superyacht charter, and is honestly more photogenic in the kind of intimate, lived-in shots that perform best now compared to the staged, oversized superyacht aesthetic of a few years ago.
What it costs to actually charter one
A reasonable mid-size yacht charter for a short multi-day trip with crew can start in the range of a few thousand euros per day depending on the season and region, which sounds steep until you split it across a group of six to eight people, at which point it becomes comparable to a very good hotel stay per person, with a completely different experience attached.
Booking it without getting overcharged
Always book through a recognised charter agency rather than directly approaching boats at the harbour; reputable agencies handle insurance, crew vetting, and contracts properly, and the price difference compared to a dockside deal is usually explained by exactly those protections. Confirm whether fuel, port fees, and crew gratuities are included in your quoted price, since these can add a meaningful percentage to the final bill if assumed rather than confirmed upfront.
The best months to go
Late May to June and September are increasingly preferred over the peak July-August window: water temperatures are still warm, harbours are less congested, and prices for both charters and shoreside stays drop noticeably once the school-holiday crowd has thinned.

What Indian travellers should know before booking one
A Mediterranean yacht charter is increasingly within reach for a well-planned group trip from India, not just an ultra-wealthy indulgence, especially when split across six to eight friends or family members and timed for the cheaper shoulder season. Budget for travel insurance that explicitly covers water sports and chartered vessels, since standard travel policies often exclude this, and confirm visa requirements for every port your route touches, since a short island-hopping itinerary can quietly cross two or three Schengen countries in a single weekend.
The short yacht hop is not a downgrade from the week-long charter, it is simply a more efficient way to get the same feeling: open water, a good harbour dinner, and a return to land before the trip starts to feel like logistics.
