Cabo San Lucas sits at the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez at a granite rock formation known as El Arco, or Land's End, the town's defining image. What began in the mid-20th century as a remote sport-fishing outpost, drawing a scattering of Hollywood names in search of marlin rather than nightlife, has grown into one of the most consistently visited resort towns for wealthy Americans, a short flight from Los Angeles and much of the western United States.

A fishing town's Hollywood origin story

Cabo's celebrity association predates its modern resort infrastructure by decades: sport-fishing enthusiasts, reportedly including Bing Crosby and John Wayne, are said to have visited the tip of the Baja peninsula from the 1950s onward, drawn by some of the richest marlin waters in the Pacific, long before paved roads reliably connected Cabo to the rest of Mexico.

A tequila brand born of a Cabo friendship

More recently, Cabo San Lucas has been widely reported as the origin of Casamigos, the tequila brand George Clooney and Rande Gerber are reported to have started developing at their respective homes in the area, before selling the company in 2017 in a deal reported to be worth up to a billion dollars. Clooney and Gerber have both been widely reported to maintain property in the Los Cabos area.

What draws the crowd today

Cabo's modern pull rests on its marina, its beach clubs along the Médano Beach strip, and a cluster of resorts built into the headland above El Arco, packaged around a flight time from major US cities that is often shorter than a domestic transcontinental journey. That accessibility, more than any single hotel or restaurant, is what has kept a wealthy American clientele returning for decades.

Traveller tips

  • Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is the main gateway; there is no direct flight from India, so journeys typically connect through the United States or Mexico City.
  • The dry season, roughly November to May, brings the most reliable weather; hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking in September.
  • Boat trips out to El Arco and Lover's Beach are a popular way to see the rock formation from the water rather than the clifftop.
  • Indian passport holders generally need a Mexican visa; confirm current requirements with official Mexican consular channels before booking.
