Inside Banff's Grand Mountain Lodges, Where the Rockies Meet Old-World Hospitality

Banff National Park, Canada's oldest, spreads across the Alberta Rockies in a run of glacial lakes, hot springs and jagged peaks, and its best-known stays are two railway-era hotels built to draw travellers into that landscape in the first place. Both remain in operation more than a century on, turreted and stone-built, offering a grander, slower way to sit inside the mountains than a day trip ever could.

A hotel built beside a hot spring

The Fairmont Banff Springs, opened in 1888 by the Canadian Pacific Railway and rebuilt in its current Scottish baronial style in 1928, sits above the Bow River with the Sulphur Mountain hot springs a short walk away. Its scale is part of the draw, a castle-like silhouette against the Rockies, with golf, spa and hiking access built into the same stay.

The chateau on the lake

An hour's drive north, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise sits directly on the shore of Lake Louise, its turquoise water fed by the Victoria Glacier above. First built in 1890 and expanded repeatedly since, the hotel's simplest luxury is its position: guest rooms and the lakeside terrace look straight across the water to the glacier without a road or car park in the frame.

What fills the days

Both hotels sit inside a national park built for movement rather than lounging: canoe hire on Lake Louise, the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain, and trailheads for short, well-marked hikes all start within minutes of the front door. Winter shifts the pattern toward the three ski areas around Banff and Lake Louise, with the hotels staying open and considerably quieter through the coldest months.

Traveller tips

  • Calgary International Airport, roughly ninety minutes away by road, is the nearest major airport for both hotels.
  • Lake Louise's parking lot fills by early morning in summer; a shuttle or early arrival avoids the wait.
  • Book well ahead for July and August, the park's peak season, and for the Christmas and New Year weeks in winter.
  • Wildlife, including elk and black bears, is commonly seen near both properties; keep a respectful distance and follow posted park guidance.
