Bandhavgarh National Park sits in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, a compact reserve by Indian standards but one that consistently records among the highest densities of wild Bengal tigers of any park in the country. It was once the private hunting reserve of the Maharajas of Rewa, and its most famous resident was never actually seen by most visitors: Mohan, a wild white tiger captured near Bandhavgarh in 1951, became the ancestor of virtually every white tiger now living in captivity worldwide. Here are seven things to do, each with a direct map link.

1. Take a tiger safari in the Tala zone

Tala is Bandhavgarh's core zone and generally regarded as having the reserve's highest tiger density, making it the most sought-after safari zone and the hardest to book in peak season, typically arranged as an early morning or afternoon jeep safari.

2. Explore the ruins of Bandhavgarh Fort

Perched on a hill within the park and said to date back well over a thousand years, Bandhavgarh Fort is largely abandoned and overgrown today, but its ramparts and gateways remain accessible on certain safari routes, giving visitors a hilltop vantage point over the surrounding forest.

3. See the Shesh Shaiya reclining Vishnu carving

Near the base of the fort lies a large stone sculpture of Vishnu reclining on the serpent Shesha, carved directly into rock beside a natural spring, one of several ancient religious carvings scattered through the reserve that hint at the site's long history before it became a wildlife park.

4. Go birdwatching across the reserve

Beyond its tigers, Bandhavgarh supports a substantial bird population, from raptors and hornbills to a wide range of waterbirds around its streams and ponds, making a slower-paced safari focused on birdlife a worthwhile change of pace from the tiger-spotting circuit.

5. Try the Magadhi and Khitauli zones

Beyond Tala, the Magadhi and Khitauli zones offer a different mix of grassland and denser forest habitat, generally less crowded than Tala while still holding a healthy resident tiger population, along with sizeable herds of spotted deer and sambar.

6. Look for the reserve's ancient rock-cut caves

Scattered through the park are a number of small rock-cut caves and shelters, some bearing old inscriptions, believed to have served as retreats for monks and ascetics centuries before the area was set aside for wildlife protection.

7. Spend an evening in Tala village

The small village of Tala, just outside the park gates, is the usual base for visitors, with lodges and simple restaurants where guides and naturalists often share the day's sightings, a useful way to get a feel for the reserve beyond the safari vehicle itself.

Traveller tips

  • The nearest railway station is Umaria, roughly an hour's drive away; Jabalpur airport is the closest with regular flight connections.
  • Safari permits are limited and zone-specific; book jeep safaris in advance, especially for the Tala zone in peak winter months.
  • The park is closed to visitors during the monsoon, typically from July to September; October to June is the safari season, with April to June generally offering the best tiger sightings as water sources shrink.
  • Tiger sightings are never guaranteed; a good naturalist guide improves the odds but the reserve's other wildlife makes any safari worthwhile regardless.
