The Azores Are Quietly Europe's Most Underrated Islands

Nine volcanic islands sit in the middle of the Atlantic, roughly halfway between Lisbon and New York, covered in crater lakes, hydrangea hedges, and cliffs that drop straight into deep blue water. They belong to Portugal, they are reachable on a direct flight from several European hubs, and they remain almost entirely absent from the summer crowds crushing the rest of southern Europe. That gap will not last much longer.

Why São Miguel is the island to start with

São Miguel, the largest and most connected of the nine islands, holds the two views that made the Azores an editorial favourite in the first place: the twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades, one blue and one green depending on the light, seen from the Vista do Rei viewpoint, and the volcanic hot springs of Furnas, where locals still bury pots of stew in the geothermal earth to cook overnight. Both are reachable on a single long day from Ponta Delgada, the main town.

The weather trade-off, stated plainly

The Azores earn their green by way of genuinely changeable weather, four seasons in a single afternoon is a real possibility even in July, so this is not a guaranteed beach-holiday sun trip. What it trades for that unpredictability is a landscape that looks nothing like the rest of Europe, closer to Ireland dropped into the mid-Atlantic than anything Mediterranean.

What it actually costs

A comfortable week on São Miguel, including a rental car (essential, there is no real public transport network), a mid-range guesthouse, and most meals, runs meaningfully below a comparable week in the Amalfi Coast or Santorini, largely because the islands still have almost no luxury-brand hotel presence to inflate prices.

One honest caution

Flight connections outside peak summer thin out fast, so build in a buffer day on either end of the trip rather than a tight connection, and confirm return flight schedules before booking activities on the last full day.
