Why Aspen, Not Vail, Remains America's Old-Money Ski Town
A Colorado mining town turned four-mountain ski resort, Aspen has drawn a wealthy, well-established winter crowd since the 1950s, well before Vail or Park City built their own reputations.

Aspen, a former silver-mining town tucked into Colorado's Rocky Mountains, has been the United States' most consistently wealthy ski address since the 1950s, well before Vail existed as a resort or Park City had built its current profile. Four interconnected mountains, a historic core that never fully modernised into a resort-village template, and decades of cultivated exclusivity have kept it that way.
From silver bust to ski boom
Aspen's silver mining industry collapsed after the Silver Panic of 1893, leaving the town close to a ghost settlement for decades. Its revival began in the 1940s, when local boosters and the Chicago industrialist Walter Paepcke saw potential in the surrounding mountains and helped found both the Aspen Skiing Corporation and the Aspen Institute, pairing skiing with music festivals and intellectual gatherings that gave the town a cultural identity most ski resorts never bothered building.

Four mountains, one small town
Aspen Mountain rises directly above downtown, while Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass sit a short drive away, together forming the terrain Aspen Skiing Company markets as a single pass. Buttermilk hosted the Winter X Games for years, giving the town a competitive-sport profile alongside its older reputation for private, low-key winters.
A town that stayed small on purpose
Unlike purpose-built resort villages, Aspen kept its Victorian-era downtown, including the Hotel Jerome, open since 1889, largely intact, and strict local zoning has kept large-scale development limited. That has kept both property prices and the town's population deliberately small, reinforcing its reputation as a winter address for people who already have somewhere else to be seen.
Traveller tips
- Aspen/Pitkin County Airport has a short runway that limits larger aircraft; many visitors instead fly into Denver and drive or take a connecting flight.
- Downtown Aspen is walkable; a free shuttle bus connects the four mountains for skiers without a car.
- Book accommodation many months ahead for the Christmas and New Year weeks, the town's busiest and most expensive stretch.
- Summer brings a quieter, cheaper version of the same town, built around hiking and the Aspen Music Festival.
