Ashford Castle Has Stood on Lough Corrib Since the 1220s, and Guests Still Arrive Past Its Falconers

Ashford Castle sits on the shore of Lough Corrib in County Mayo, its oldest walls dating to around 1228, when the de Burgo family built a fortified home on the site. It passed through French and English hands before the Guinness family bought it in 1852, adding the turrets, the Victorian wing and much of the estate's present-day silhouette. It has operated as a hotel since 1939 and is now run by Red Carnation Hotels, which completed a lengthy restoration of the property last decade.

A guest list that spans a century

The castle's visitor book includes King George V, Oscar Wilde and, in 1984, US President Ronald Reagan, whose ancestral home lies a short drive from the estate. John Lennon reportedly stayed here in the late 1960s. The neighbouring village of Cong, reachable on foot along the lake path, was the principal filming location for John Ford's 1952 film The Quiet Man, and the village still trades gently on the connection.

Falconry on the front lawn

Ireland's School of Falconry has operated from the castle grounds since 1999, one of the longest-running falconry schools in the country, and remains one of the estate's more distinctive fixtures: guests can walk the grounds with a Harris's hawk on the glove, a genuinely different way to see the 350-acre demesne than from a car or a boat.

The lake itself

Lough Corrib is Ireland's second-largest lake, and the castle's own boats still take guests out onto it, past the ruins of smaller island abbeys that predate the castle itself.

Traveller tips

  • Cong village is a ten-minute walk along the lake path and worth doing on arrival, before checking any Quiet Man trivia against the small local museum.
  • Falconry sessions and lake cruises both need booking ahead in peak season; the estate does not always have same-day slots.
  • Galway city and airport are under an hour's drive, making the castle a realistic first or last stop on an Ireland itinerary rather than a detour.
  • Ireland's weather turns quickly by the lake; pack for rain regardless of season.
