Araku Valley sits in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh, roughly 1,300 metres above sea level and a winding drive or train ride inland from the port city of Visakhapatnam. Its cool climate and volcanic soil have made it one of the few coffee-growing belts outside peninsular India's southern hills, with cultivation largely run through cooperatives of the region's Adivasi communities, including the Kondh and Bagata peoples, who have farmed these slopes for generations. Here's how to spend a couple of days there.

1. Ride the Kirandul train through the Araku Valley line

The railway between Visakhapatnam and Araku is regularly cited among India's most scenic routes, cutting through more than 50 tunnels and across numerous bridges and viaducts as it climbs into the Eastern Ghats, including the notable Borra Ghat horseshoe curve.

2. Explore the Borra Caves

Among India's largest known cave systems, Borra's limestone chambers were formed by the Gosthani River and contain dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations, some lit for visitor access and reachable via a steep but manageable descent.

3. Visit the Museum of Habitat, Araku

Built partly underground into the hillside, this tribal heritage museum documents the dress, tools, art and dwellings of the region's Adivasi communities, and remains one of the more thoughtfully curated tribal museums in the country.

4. Tour a coffee estate

Several cooperative-run coffee estates around Araku offer walks through the plantations and explain the region's shift toward organic, cooperative-based cultivation, a model that has drawn attention as a case study in tribal-led agriculture.

5. See the Padmapuram Botanical Gardens

A terraced garden complex on the way into Araku town, with a small cable car, a hanging bridge and a collection of regional flora, popular chiefly as an easy half-day stop rather than a serious botanical destination.

6. Visit the Tyda Eco Park

En route between Visakhapatnam and Araku, this forested park has a suspension bridge, a small zoo enclosure and walking trails through the Eastern Ghats' deciduous forest, making a natural break on the road journey.

7. Sample Araku coffee at source

Beyond the estate tours, the town itself has small cafés serving locally grown and roasted coffee, a straightforward but genuinely worthwhile way to taste a crop still relatively unfamiliar to much of the rest of India.

Traveller tips

  • Visakhapatnam, with its airport and rail junction, is the usual gateway; the scenic train and the road both take roughly three to four hours to Araku.
  • October to March offers the most comfortable weather, with cool mornings well suited to the valley's viewpoints.
  • The Araku Valley passenger train has limited daily departures and advance booking is recommended in peak season.
  • Borra Caves' interior can be humid and slippery; sturdy footwear is worth packing.
