English Harbour, Antigua: The Caribbean's Quiet Old-Money Yachting Base
Built around Nelson's Dockyard, a restored Georgian-era naval base, English Harbour has been the Caribbean's premier superyacht anchorage for decades, drawing a wealthy sailing crowd for its annual regattas rather than its nightlife.

Antigua's south coast folds into a deep, hurricane-sheltered inlet that the Royal Navy first fortified in the 18th century, when Horatio Nelson was posted here as a young captain. That naval history is why English Harbour looks the way it does today: Nelson's Dockyard, its restored Georgian dockyard buildings, is the best-preserved example of its kind in the world and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, under the name Antigua Naval Dockyard and Related Archaeological Sites.

A harbour built for sailing, not spectacle
Unlike the Caribbean's more visible celebrity anchorages, English Harbour's reputation rests on sailing pedigree rather than nightlife. It has been a fixture of the international yacht-racing calendar since Antigua Sailing Week was first run in 1968, and the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, held each spring, draws vintage and classic sailing yachts from across the Atlantic. The harbour's deep, protected anchorage and its full-service dockyard have made it a long-standing seasonal base for superyacht owners moving between the Caribbean and the Mediterranean circuits.
What that means for a visitor
English Harbour is not gated the way some old-money enclaves are; Nelson's Dockyard is a working marina and a functioning museum quarter, with cafés, chandleries and the Dockyard Museum open to anyone walking in. The best time to see the anchorage at its fullest is during Sailing Week in late April and early May, when the harbour fills with yachts of every era and the surrounding hills of Shirley Heights offer a wide view down over the moorings.
Traveller tips
- V. C. Bird International Airport, Antigua's main gateway, is around a 30 to 40 minute drive from English Harbour.
- Shirley Heights Lookout, above the harbour, is a well-known viewpoint, especially at sunset on Sunday evenings when a long-running barbecue and steel-band gathering takes place there.
- Antigua Sailing Week and the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta are the two events most likely to fill the harbour with visiting yachts; book accommodation well ahead if travelling around either.
- Nelson's Dockyard's museum and historic buildings are open to day visitors independent of any event.
