Air India Express started scheduled service to six new Indian cities from 1 September 2026: Aurangabad, Coimbatore, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Madurai and Tirupati, taking the low-cost carrier's overall domestic and international network to 64 destinations. The expansion adds direct or same-day connecting options from several tier-two cities that previously relied on longer routings through larger hub airports.

What's new on each route

Aurangabad and Jamnagar each gain twice-daily service to Delhi and Mumbai respectively, Jodhpur is connected to both Delhi and Mumbai, Coimbatore gains a Mumbai link, Madurai is connected to Chennai, and Tirupati gains a route to Hyderabad. Several existing routes have also had frequencies added, including Delhi to Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Patna and Varanasi, with Delhi-Bhubaneswar and Delhi-Patna moving to four flights a day.

Why these particular cities

The new destinations span pilgrimage and heritage travel (Jodhpur, Tirupati), textile and industrial business travel (Coimbatore, Jamnagar) and a mix of both (Aurangabad, gateway to Ajanta and Ellora, and Madurai's Meenakshi Temple), suggesting the airline is targeting routes with both leisure and business demand rather than pure tourism traffic alone. Air India Express has been steadily building out its domestic network since its 2022 merger with AirAsia India, and this expansion continues that pattern of adding tier-two connections rather than concentrating solely on metro-to-metro routes.

What travellers should confirm before booking

Frequencies, timings and fares on newly launched routes can change once real demand data comes in, and seasonal or thinly served routes are sometimes reduced within their first year. Travellers should confirm current schedules, fares and any applicable baggage or fare-class conditions directly through Air India Express's official website or app before booking onward travel around these routes.

Traveller tips

  • The six new routes went live from 1 September 2026: Aurangabad-Delhi, Coimbatore-Mumbai, Jamnagar-Mumbai, Jodhpur-Delhi and Mumbai, Madurai-Chennai, and Tirupati-Hyderabad.
  • Aurangabad and Jodhpur are useful new gateways for Ajanta-Ellora and western Rajasthan heritage circuits respectively, cutting out a change of flight via Delhi or Mumbai.
  • Existing Delhi routes to Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Patna and Varanasi have also gained extra daily frequencies.
  • Confirm current schedules and fares with Air India Express's official channels before booking, as new routes can see frequency changes in their first months.
